Happy Statehood Anniversary to Delaware!
Delaware proudly earned its moniker as “The First State” after being the first of the 13 original colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787.
Delaware’s State Flag
The Delaware state flag features a diamond shape on a colonial blue background. Inside the diamond is the state’s coat of arms, which includes a shield with a horizontal background of alternating blue and white stripes. A ship is positioned near the top of the shield, symbolizing Delaware’s maritime history. Below the ship is a yellow sheaf of wheat, representing the agricultural aspect of the state.
The supporters on each side of the shield are a farmer on the left and a militiaman on the right, reflecting Delaware’s commitment to both agriculture and defense. The state motto, “Liberty and Independence,” is written on a ribbon beneath the shield, emphasizing Delaware’s historical significance in the struggle for independence.
