Historical Context:
The American Gold Star Mother’s flag traces its origins to World War I. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson approved the use of the gold star on mourning armbands, formally recognizing it as a national symbol of sacrifice. A decade later, in 1928, Grace Darling Seibold—who had lost her own son in the war—founded American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. to bring together and support bereaved mothers. Congress later designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day in 1936, and in 2011 expanded it to Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day to honor all immediate family members of the fallen.
