This is the large polyester American flag for tall commercial poles, car dealerships, and windy sites where a nylon flag wears out too fast. The UV-resistant 100% polyester is heavy enough to hold up in steady wind, and the flag finishes with a poly duck heading, a braided nylon rope running through it, and two galvanized chrome steel thimbles at the ends so it hangs from the halyard the way large flags are meant to.

Nine sizes run from 8 FT x 12 FT to 30 FT x 60 FT. The stars are embroidered, or appliqued on the largest sizes, and the stripes are sewn. Every flag is made in the USA. If you are unsure which size your pole takes, call us with the pole height and we will match it.

The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777, with 13 stripes for the original colonies and 13 stars for a new constellation. As states joined the Union the star count grew, and the 50-star pattern in use today was set on July 4, 1960 after Hawaii became a state. The rules for displaying the flag, including half-staff and nighttime display, are set out in the United States Flag Code.

Polyester came into use for large outdoor flags because it does what cotton did, holds its weight in the wind, without rotting when it stays wet. A roped heading with thimbles is the traditional way to hang a flag this size, since grommets would tear out of a 20 FT flag in the first storm.

What size flag does my pole need?

The usual rule is a flag length of one fifth to one quarter of the pole height. A 40 FT pole takes 8 FT x 12 FT, a 50 FT pole takes 10 FT x 15 FT or 10 FT x 19 FT, a 60 FT pole takes 12 FT x 18 FT, and an 80 FT pole takes 15 FT x 25 FT or 20 FT x 30 FT. Call us if your pole is between sizes.

Why rope and thimbles instead of grommets?

Grommets concentrate the load at two points. On a flag this size that would tear the heading. The rope spreads the load along the whole heading, and the thimbles give the halyard snaps a hard, smooth eye to hold.

How do I attach it to the halyard?

Clip the halyard snap hooks to the top and bottom thimbles. Make sure the halyard is rated for the flag size and that the truck and snaps are in good condition, since a large flag puts real load on them.

Is polyester better than nylon for my site?

For a pole over 40 FT, or any site with steady wind, yes. Polyester is heavier and wears longer. Nylon is lighter and flies in less wind, which suits residential poles better.

Can I fly this flag at night?

Yes, if it is lit. The Flag Code calls for the flag to be illuminated when it is displayed after dark.

How do I fly it at half-staff?

Raise the flag briskly to the top of the pole first, then lower it slowly to half-staff. At the end of the day raise it to the top again before lowering it. Half-staff observances are set by presidential or gubernatorial proclamation, and we post the current ones on our site.

What do I do when the flag wears out?

Bring it to us or send it in and we will tell you whether it can be repaired. If it is past saving, retire it through your local VFW or American Legion post, or at home following the Flag Code. Our repair and disposal page explains each option.
