Happy Statehood Anniversary to Louisiana!
Today, we celebrate Louisiana, the 18th state to join the United States on April 30, 1812! Also known as the Pelican State, Louisiana is a vibrant state steeped in rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
The pelican took flight as the state’s official bird in 1912, and it also graces the state flag. The flag’s design is both simple and symbolic. The background is a solid blue field, and centered on it is a nest with three young pelicans. A mother pelican stands above them, with her head turned away and a white banner below the nest containing the state motto: “Union, Justice, and Confidence.” The image depicts the pelican feeding her young with blood from her breast, a symbol of self-sacrifice with roots in pre-Christian myths.
Here are a few fun facts to add some spice to your celebration:
- Louisiana is home to New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz music. This lively city is famous for its annual Mardi Gras celebrations, known for their elaborate costumes, parades, and music.
- With over 1,500 miles of coastline, Louisiana boasts some of the wettest places in the United States.
- The state is a melting pot of cultures, influenced by French, Spanish, African, and Native American traditions. This unique blend is reflected in its cuisine, music, and festivals.
So, if you’re looking for a state with a rich history, delicious food, and a one-of-a-kind culture, then look no further than Louisiana! Let’s raise a glass (or perhaps a beignet) to the Pelican State on its special day!
