Celebrating the Palmetto State: South Carolina's 236th Statehood Anniversary!
On May 23rd, we raise a glass (of sweet tea, perhaps?) to celebrate South Carolina’s official entry into the United States!
Steeped in history as rich as the soil, and boasting a culture as vibrant as its beaches, South Carolina ratified the Constitution in 1788 as the eighth state to do so. The state’s nickname, “The Palmetto State”, was coined in honor of the plentiful palmetto trees that grace its landscape.
South Carolina’s state flag is a powerful symbol, featuring a palmetto tree (hence the nickname) on a blue field. The palmetto tree’s resilience was famously demonstrated during the Revolutionary War at Fort Moultrie, where cannonballs bounced harmlessly off its thick fibers.
South Carolina is more than just history lessons! Here are a few fun facts to add some Southern charm to your day:
- Foodie Paradise: South Carolina takes its food seriously. From fluffy buttermilk biscuits and creamy grits to bowls of steaming she-crab soup and plates piled high with BBQ, your tastebuds will be thanking you.
- Hit the Beach: Boasting miles of pristine coastline, South Carolina is a beach lover’s dream. Soak up the sun on Myrtle Beach, explore the historic barrier islands, or hunt for seashells on Hilton Head.
- Secret Society of Shell Ring Builders: For thousands of years, a mysterious civilization lived along the South Carolina coast. Evidence of their existence comes in the form of enormous shell rings, some reaching up to 9 feet high and hundreds of feet in diameter! Archaeologists are still piecing together the purpose and builders of these fascinating structures.
Whether you’re a beach bum, food geek, or history buff, South Carolina has something for everyone. Explore South Carolina’s beauty: beaches, history, or ancient oaks.
