Can My Flag Be Repaired?
It is best to pursue repair sooner rather than later. The stripes tell you where a flag stands. Compare the length of the intact stripes to the length of the star field, and you will know whether the flag can be saved.
Repairable
If the flag is intact and its untattered stripes are longer than or equal to the length of the star field, our craftspeople can fully repair it.
Non-repairable
If the intact stripes are shorter than the star field, the flag is beyond repair and it is time to replace it. We will help you retire the old one with dignity.
Flag Repair and Alteration Services
Eight sewing services, all done in our own shop. Tell us how the flag is displayed and we will tell you what it needs. Cost and turnaround are confirmed in writing before any work starts.
Fly End Cutting & Hemming
The fly end is the loose end that tatters in the wind over time. We cut away the tattered section and hem it clean.
Fly End Reinforcement
Extra stitching on the fly end slows and prevents tattering. Available for all flag sizes.
Pole Hem
A sleeve sewn along the hoist that slides over a pole. We can add one to any flag, so it drapes beautifully indoors or takes part in a parade.
Rope & Thimble Attachment
A heavier duty alternative to grommets. Recommended for flags measuring 8 x 12 feet and larger.
Fringe
Sewn onto any flag for a classic formal flair. Recommended for parade flags and indoor ceremonial display, most often in gold.
Corner Reinforcement
For large flags, our craftsmen patch the fly end corners so they hold up longer in wind.
Non-Tangle Rod Patching
For flags attached to buildings. A grommeted patch is sewn to the bottom of the flag, and a rod connects it to the pole so the flag cannot tangle.
Header & Grommets
A sturdy canvas header with brass grommets, added to any flag. We can also reset grommets for horizontal hanging.
How to Retire a Flag
The U.S. Flag Code says a flag that is no longer a fitting emblem for display should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning (4 U.S. Code § 8(k)). Burning nylon, polyester, and other synthetics gives off toxic fumes, so a burning ceremony is only recommended for 100% cotton flags. Burial in a wooden box is a common alternative and is not addressed by the Code.

Bring it to 100 S. Quaker Ln, Alexandria, VA 22314, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, or ship it to the same address. Include your name, a phone number, and what you would like done.
