Choose Your Options
Every U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) - Sewn Flag is made to order, so tell us how you want it built. These are the choices.

- Printed or sewn: Printed flags are dye-printed on 200 denier nylon, so fine seal detail reproduces exactly. Sewn flags are appliquéd and embroidered by hand in our Alexandria, Virginia shop: each color is a separate piece of fabric stitched to the field, with lettering and fine detail embroidered.
- Single-sided, double-sided or mirror-sided: A single-sided flag carries the design on the front only; the back is blank. A double-sided flag is two flags sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides. A mirror-sided flag is also two layers, but the back is a mirror image of the front.
- Plain finish: Grommet flags are made plain, with hemmed edges and no fringe. Fringe is an indoor finish, and it does not belong on a flag that flies in weather.
- Lock stitch construction (sewn flags): Every sewn grommet flag is lock stitched, the stronger interlocking stitch, because an outdoor flag takes more wind than an indoor one. There is no regular grade for grommet flags.
- Size: 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 52x66 IN are standard. For a custom size, give us the finished width and height you need.

Historical Background
Congress created the Department of the Interior on March 3, 1849, the day before Zachary Taylor took office, by an act establishing a Home Department. The new department gathered up work that had been scattered across the government: the General Land Office from Treasury, the Patent Office from State, Indian Affairs from War, and the military pension offices. Thomas Ewing Sr. served as its first Secretary.
Over the next century Interior became the steward of the public lands. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, Pelican Island became the first national wildlife refuge in 1903, the National Park Service was created within the department in 1916, and the Fish and Wildlife Service was formed inside it in 1940. Congress authorized an official seal in 1912, and the bison design first appeared on the seal die in 1917.
About the Department of the Interior (DOI) Flag
The Department of the Interior (DOI) Flag carries the agency's official emblem as the centerpiece of the design. The seal shows a bison standing on the prairie with mountains and a rising sun behind it, ringed by the words U.S. Department of the Interior and the date March 3, 1849. We reproduce it to the agency's specification, in the finish and size you order.
