Artwork

Artwork Requirements for Custom Printed Flags

Good art in, good flag out. Three things decide how well your file prints: the file type, the resolution, and how the art is sized. If you need help preparing a file, our in-house design team can step in.

Pixels 150 DPI min

Raster files

Raster files are built from pixels: JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PSD, photos, and scans. They print well when the resolution is there. Build the art at the finished flag size at 150 DPI minimum, or 300 DPI when the design carries fine detail.

Points and curves, sharp at any size

Vector files

Preferred format. Vector art is drawn from points and curves, so it scales to any flag size with clean edges. Send EPS, SVG, or AI. Convert all fonts to outlines, and embed any linked images in the file.

Finished size 3 FT x 5 FT 1/8 in bleed

Dimensions and bleed

Size the file to the exact flag dimensions, then add a 1/8 inch bleed on every side. The bleed is trimmed off in production so the design runs fully to the edge. A 3 FT x 5 FT flag is set up at 3 FT x 5 FT plus that extra margin.

Color. Build files in CMYK. If a color has to match exactly, give us the PMS number from the Pantone Color Finder and we will match to it. Gradients and transparencies need a solid background and stated CMYK or PMS values, because a transparency that looks right on screen can drop out on fabric.

Material Guide

Why Custom Printed Flags Use Nylon

An industry standard

All custom printed flags are made from one material: 200 denier UV-resistant nylon. Lightweight and water-resistant, nylon provides affordable durability and longevity. It is no surprise that the majority of flags are made of nylon. If you want sewn construction instead of print, our appliqué and embroidery work is handcrafted to order.

  • Acid dye bonds into the fiber, so color goes deep and stays bright outdoors
  • Light enough to fly in a gentle breeze
  • Works indoors and out, and dries quickly after rain

Construction

Single-Sided vs Double-Sided Custom Printed Flags

Both are printed the same way. The difference is what the back of the flag shows, and how the flag flies.

Single-sided flag illustration. The National Capital Flag seal reads correctly on the flag marked Front and appears reversed on the flag marked Back.

Single sided

A standard single-sided flag displays your image as intended on the front, with the reverse image on the back. Lighter, flies in less wind, and right for most outdoor flags. Most custom printed flags are ordered this way.

Double-sided flag illustration. The National Capital Flag seal reads correctly on both the flag marked Front and the flag marked Back.

Double sided

A double-sided flag is two single-sided flags sewn back to back, so it displays exactly the same on both sides. The extra layers add weight and cost, and the flag needs more wind to fly. Choose it when text must read correctly from both directions.

Finishing

Finish Options for Custom Printed Flags

The finish is how the flag attaches to its pole. Pick the one that matches how the flag will be displayed. Not sure? Tell us where it will fly and we will match it. All custom printed flags pair with the poles, brackets, and bases in our hardware and accessories catalog.

Header and grommets

A stiff canvas header with brass grommets, used for securely attaching a flag to an exterior pole or halyard.

Pole hem

A sleeve sewn along the hoist that slides over the pole. We can add one to any flag, so it drapes beautifully indoors or takes part in a parade.

Fringe

Recommended for parade flags and indoor ceremonial display. A roped heading, a rope sewn into the hoist with a thimble at each end, is used on larger custom printed flags and on halyard systems that call for it.

Sizing

Sizing Custom Printed Flags

Seamless up to 12 FT x 18 FT. Sewn to any size beyond.

We print flags from 2 FT x 3 FT up to 12 FT x 18 FT as a single seamless panel, including custom sizes in between. Need something bigger? We sew printed panels together to build flags at almost any scale, up to the kind that drapes over a building entrance. Whatever the dimensions, build your art at the exact finished size plus the 1/8 inch bleed.

  • Detail that reads at 3 FT x 5 FT can get lost at 12 FT x 18 FT. Your digital proof shows the design at final size, so you can see what the detail does before anything prints.
  • The flag has to match the pole. Tell us what it will fly on and we will confirm the size works.

Custom Printed Flags: Common Questions

Typical delivery is about 30 days, and it varies with size, quantity, and complexity. The clock includes proof approval, so a fast approval keeps the schedule tight.

Yes. We email a digital proof and wait for your written approval before production starts. Printed colors on fabric can differ from a screen, which is what the proof is for.

Single custom printed flags and volume runs both go through the same process. Send the quantity with your artwork and we will quote it.

Give us PMS or CMYK values and we will match to them. Without stated values we match to the file as sent, which is riskier on gradients and screen-only colors.

Yes. Flag repair and flag disposal are separate services, handled in house.
