Product Description

The brass Army spear finial is the traditional military spearhead in solid polished brass. It is the ornament on guidon staffs, organizational colors, and indoor military flagpoles, and it fits the standard ferrule on our parade and presentation poles. Two sizes, 7 IN and 8 1/4 IN. The same spear is available in polished chrome.

Solid brass has real weight in the hand and a warm gold color that deepens with age. It matches brass joints, gilt stands, and golden yellow cord and tassel, which is why it is the finial most Army units, honor guards, and veterans’ posts choose. Find matching poles and stands in our hardware and accessories.

Brass Army Spear Finial Features

  • Solid polished brass – cast brass, not plated, polished to a high shine.
  • Traditional Army spear profile – the shape specified for guidons and unit colors.
  • Two sizes – 7 IN for guidon staffs and 1 IN poles, 8 1/4 IN for 1 1/4 IN parade and indoor poles.
  • Standard fitting – threads onto the ferrule on our guidon, parade, and indoor poles.
  • Corrosion resistant – brass does not rust and polishes back to new.

Historical Background

The spear on a military flagstaff descends from the lance head that carried a unit’s standard into battle. U.S. Army regulations have long specified the spearhead for guidons and organizational colors, and the pattern is essentially unchanged from the nineteenth century. Brass was the natural material: it casts cleanly, takes a polish, and survives decades of handling. A brass Army spear finial on a guidon is the piece of hardware every soldier recognizes from formations and ceremonies.

Is it solid brass or plated?

Solid brass, cast and polished. It will tarnish slowly and polishes back with brass cleaner.

Which size do I need?

7 IN for a guidon staff or a 1 IN pole, 8 1/4 IN for a 1 1/4 IN parade or indoor pole.

Will it fit my staff?

It threads onto the standard ferrule on guidon and parade staffs. If your staff is an unusual size, call us with the thread measurement.

Can it be used outdoors?

It is intended for indoor and parade use. Brass tolerates weather better than plated finishes but will tarnish faster outdoors.

Should the American flag get a spear or an eagle?

Custom puts an eagle on the American flag indoors. On a guidon or a unit color, the spear is correct.

How do I polish it?

Use a brass polish and a soft cloth, then buff dry. Solid brass darkens slowly indoors and comes back to a full shine every time; there is no plating to wear through.
