Commonly asked questions about flagpoles

The halyard is the rope that raises and lowers the flag. On an external halyard pole the rope runs up the outside of the pole and ties off on a cleat. It is the simplest setup and the easiest to service. On an internal halyard pole the rope runs inside the pole and locks behind a small access door, so the flag cannot be lowered without the key. Schools, agencies and businesses usually choose internal halyard for that reason.

A common rule of thumb is a flag length about one quarter to one third of the pole height above ground. A 20 FT pole flies a 3 FT x 5 FT or 4 FT x 6 FT flag well. Most homes fly a flag from a bracket-mounted pole set at an angle on the porch, garage or a post. Our tangle-free spinning poles let the flag rotate around the pole in the wind so it does not wrap. If you want the flag flying overhead in the yard, an in-ground pole is the better choice.
