Product Description

This is the indoor American flag with gold fringe you see in courtrooms, council chambers, classrooms, and offices: 200 denier nylon with 50 embroidered stars and sewn stripes, a lined pole hem, and a 2.5 IN golden yellow rayon fringe on three sides. It mounts on an indoor pole with two Velcro or leather tabs and is made in the USA.

Fringe marks a flag as a ceremonial one, meant to stand on a pole beside a desk or podium rather than fly outdoors. Six sizes are available, from 2 FT x 3 FT for a small office to 5 FT x 8 FT for a stage or auditorium, plus the 52 IN x 66 IN presentation size. For the same flag with larger, brighter stars, see our Signature Presentation American flag.

  • 2.5 IN golden yellow rayon fringe – sewn on the top, fly, and bottom edges, matching our cord and tassel sets.

  • Lined pole hem – a nylon or flannel-lined sleeve that slides over the pole and hangs straight.
  • Velcro or leather tabs – two tabs at the hoist keep the flag from slipping down the pole.

Historical Background

Fringe on the American flag is a matter of custom, not law. The Flag Code does not mention it, and the military has used fringed national colors since the nineteenth century. A 1925 Attorney General opinion described fringe as an honorable enrichment, and the Army specifies it for flags carried indoors and on parade. By long practice an indoor American flag with gold fringe stands in courtrooms, legislatures, and offices, and an unfringed flag flies outdoors.

The flag itself dates to the resolution of June 14, 1777, with the 50-star field in use since 1960.

Which size goes on an 8 FT indoor pole?

3 FT x 5 FT. Use 4 FT x 6 FT on a 9 FT pole and 2 FT x 3 FT or 2.5 FT x 4 FT on a 6 FT or 7 FT pole.

Velcro or leather tabs?

Both hold the flag at the top of the pole. Leather tabs tie around the pole and are traditional. Velcro tabs wrap and press, and are quicker to change.

Can a fringed flag be flown outdoors?

It can, but fringe frays quickly in wind and rain. Fringed flags are for indoor and parade use. Fly an unfringed grommet flag outdoors.

Does the fringe run all the way around?

On three sides: top, fly end, and bottom. The hoist edge is the pole hem.

Should the American flag be higher than the state flag beside it?

On separate poles of equal height, the flags are at the same height with the American flag at its own right, which is the viewer’s left.
