  • Mounting:
    • Pole hem: a sewn sleeve along the hoist edge that slides over an indoor or parade pole.
    • Pole hem with fringe: gold rayon fringe on three edges, the traditional ceremonial finish.
    • Grommets: brass rings set into a canvas header, the standard finish for an outdoor flagpole.
  • Single-sided or double-sided: A single-sided flag carries the design on the front only; the back is blank. A double-sided flag shows the design on both sides and is built one of three ways:
    • Double-reverse: one layer of fabric, printed on one side so the dye soaks through and the design shows on the back in reverse. The lightest build.
    • Double-paneled: two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides. The heaviest build, and it needs the most wind to fly.
    • Single field, double seal: one field with the emblem on the front and a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side without the weight of two panels.
  • Printed construction: Acid dye bonds into the nylon fiber, so the color goes deep and stays bright outdoors. Every printed flag is lock stitched, the stronger interlocking stitch, on the seams and header. For appliqué and embroidery instead of print, see the sewn version of this flag.
  • Size: 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 5x8 FT, 52x66 IN. For another size, give us the finished width and height you need.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a science agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. It issues national weather forecasts and warnings, operates environmental satellites, charts U.S. coastal waters and manages marine fisheries, supported by a fleet of ships and aircraft and the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps.

NOAA's roots reach back to Feb. 10, 1807, when President Thomas Jefferson signed the act creating the Survey of the Coast, later the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Congress created a national weather service in 1870 and the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries in 1871. President Richard Nixon's Reorganization Plan No. 4 of 1970 brought their successors together as NOAA, which began operating on Oct. 3, 1970.

The NOAA flag descends from the Coast and Geodetic Survey flag of Jan. 16, 1899, a blue field with a red triangle on a white disc, the triangle standing for triangulation in surveying. NOAA kept that design and placed at its center an emblem chosen by employees in 1971, and the flag flies at NOAA installations and aboard NOAA ships.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Flag: Symbolism at a Glance

  • Blue field: The background color, carried over from the 1899 Coast and Geodetic Survey flag.
  • White disc: Part of the 1899 Coast and Geodetic Survey design. It frames the red triangle.
  • Red triangle: Triangulation in surveying, a link to the Coast and Geodetic Survey.
  • NOAA emblem: The agency's official emblem since 1971. NOAA says it illustrates the connections among the Earth, ocean, atmosphere and ecosystems.
  • White gull: Dr. Robert White said it links the atmosphere to the sea or Earth, and that the upper line of its wings resembles a foaming ocean wave.
  • Dark blue and light blue fields: The sky above and the water below.
  • NOAA offices, laboratories and National Weather Service forecast offices
  • NOAA ships, flown with the commission pennant
  • NOAA ships dressed with flags in port
  • Official NOAA ceremonies, dedications and agency events
  • Fly it beneath the American flag on an outdoor flagpole, or on its own pole beside it
Which options can I choose on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Printed Flag?

Single-sided or double-sided; a pole hem, a fringed pole hem or grommets; and 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 5x8 FT or 52x66 IN. Review them above, then call or request a quote.

How is a double-sided flag made?

Three ways. Double-reverse is one layer of fabric, so the design shows through on the back in reverse; it is the lightest build and flies in the least wind. Double-paneled is two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides; it is the heaviest. Single field, double seal is one field with a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side at close to single-layer weight.

For a flag seen from both sides indoors, double-paneled or single field double seal reads best. For an outdoor pole, double-reverse flies most easily. Tell us where the flag will hang and we will recommend one.

Should I order the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration flag sewn or printed?

Sewn appliqué and embroidery gives the emblem relief and texture, and it is the traditional choice for a ceremonial flag indoors. Printed reproduces fine seal detail exactly and is the usual choice for an outdoor flagpole. Both are made in the USA. If you are unsure, tell us where the flag will be displayed and we will recommend one.

Can the NOAA printed flag be displayed indoors?

Yes. Order it with a pole hem, plain or with fringe, for an indoor or parade pole. For a formal ceremonial flag with appliqué and embroidery, see the NOAA sewn flag.

How long does a printed flag last outdoors?

It depends on wind, sun and how often it flies. Acid dye bonds into the nylon fiber, so the color holds up well, and every printed flag is lock stitched for the wind. Tell us where the flag will fly and we will recommend a size and a replacement schedule.

How is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration flag flown with the American flag?

The American flag takes the position of honor. On separate poles of the same height it flies on its own right, which is the viewer’s left. When two flags share one halyard, the American flag is at the peak and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration flag flies below it.
