The design on the Indiana flag with grommets comes from this history.

Indiana’s flag was designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville and adopted by the 1917 General Assembly as part of the state’s centennial commemoration. The 1955 General Assembly changed its name from banner to flag.

State law (IC 1-2-2-1) calls for a blue field with nineteen stars and a flaming torch in gold or buff. Thirteen stars form an outer circle, five more form a half circle below the torch, and a larger nineteenth star for Indiana sits above the flame, with the word Indiana above it.

Symbolism at a Glance

  • Torch: Liberty and enlightenment.
  • Rays: The far-reaching influence of liberty and enlightenment.
  • Thirteen stars: The original states.
  • Large star: Indiana, the nineteenth state.

Is the Indiana flag with grommets for indoor or outdoor use?

Outdoor, on a flagpole with snap hooks or a halyard, and indoors on a wall. For an indoor pole, see the pole hem or fringe versions.

What other versions of the Indiana flag are there?

We also make it with a pole hem for indoor and parade poles and fringe for ceremonial display.

What order do the American and Indiana flags go in?

On one pole, the American flag flies at the peak with the Indiana flag beneath it. On adjacent poles, the American flag is hoisted first and lowered last, and the Indiana flag never goes above it or to its right, so the American flag sits at its own right, the viewer’s left (U.S. Flag Code, 4 U.S.C. § 7).

Which size fits a 20 FT pole?

3×5 FT or 4×6 FT, matching the American flag above it. A 25 FT pole takes 4×6 FT or 5×8 FT.

Do you carry flags for the other states?

Yes. Flags for all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories are in State & Territory Flags.
