The polycotton American flag has the look and feel of a cotton flag with less weight and better weather resistance. The polyester and cotton blend is UV-resistant, the stars are embroidered, and the stripes are sewn. It finishes with a white poly/cotton duck heading and two #2 brass grommets, in 3 FT x 5 FT, and it is made in the USA.

It is a good choice for a house bracket, a holiday display, or a customer who prefers the softer hand of cotton but wants a flag that dries faster. For daily flying in all weather, our nylon American flag will last longer.

The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777, with 13 stripes for the original colonies and 13 stars for a new constellation. As states joined the Union the star count grew, and the 50-star pattern in use today was set on July 4, 1960 after Hawaii became a state. The rules for displaying the flag, including half-staff and nighttime display, are set out in the United States Flag Code.

Cotton bunting was the flag fabric for most of the flag’s history, and many people still prefer its matte look. The polycotton blend arrived as a compromise: polyester for strength and quick drying, cotton for the hand and finish. It fills the gap between a traditional cotton American flag and an all-weather nylon one.

Polycotton, cotton, or nylon?

Nylon is the longest-lasting outdoors and flies in the least wind. Cotton has the traditional look and the most weight. Polycotton sits between them: a cotton-like finish that dries faster and weighs less than cotton.

Can I fly it every day?

Yes, in moderate weather. It will not last as long in daily sun and rain as nylon, so plan on replacing it sooner if it flies year round.

Can I use this indoors?

Yes. A grommet flag hangs well on a wall or from an indoor bracket. For a floor stand and pole, choose a flag with a pole hem and fringe instead, since the fringe is the traditional indoor finish.

Can I fly this flag at night?

Yes, if it is lit. The Flag Code calls for the flag to be illuminated when it is displayed after dark.

How do I fly it at half-staff?

Raise the flag briskly to the top of the pole first, then lower it slowly to half-staff. At the end of the day raise it to the top again before lowering it. Half-staff observances are set by presidential or gubernatorial proclamation, and we post the current ones on our site.

What do I do when the flag wears out?

Bring it to us or send it in and we will tell you whether it can be repaired. If it is past saving, retire it through your local VFW or American Legion post, or at home following the Flag Code. Our repair and disposal page explains each option.
