Product Description

The Virginia flag with grommets is the outdoor flag of the Commonwealth, printed on UV-resistant 200 denier nylon with the state seal on a deep blue field. It is finished with a white poly/cotton duck heading and two heavy-duty brass grommets, and made in the USA here in Alexandria.

We fly this flag ourselves, and we supply it to state agencies, courthouses, schools and businesses across the Commonwealth. It comes in six sizes, from 12×18 IN to 6×10 FT, so it fits everything from a garden stake to a 30 FT commercial pole.

For an indoor pole, see the pole hem version, or the fringed versions in white fringe and gold fringe.

The design on the Virginia state flag comes from this history.

The Virginia flag carries the obverse of the Great Seal of the Commonwealth on a deep blue field. The Virginia Convention adopted the seal on July 5, 1776, from a design by a committee led by George Wythe.

The seal shows Virtus, the Roman goddess of virtue and the guiding spirit of the Commonwealth, dressed as an Amazon. She rests on a spear and holds a sheathed sword, standing over Tyranny: a fallen man whose crown lies beside him, with a broken chain in one hand and a scourge in the other. Below them runs the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis, Thus Always to Tyrants.

Today the Code of Virginia (§ 1-506) defines the flag as a deep blue field with a white circle in the center bearing the coat of arms, with an optional white fringe on the edge furthest from the staff.

Symbolism at a Glance

  • Virtus: Virtue and the guiding spirit of the Commonwealth.
  • Tyranny: Overthrown, with a fallen crown, a broken chain and a scourge.
  • Sic Semper Tyrannis: Thus Always to Tyrants, a warning to any tyrant.
  • Deep blue field and white circle: The field and center set out in the Code of Virginia.

Ways to display the Virginia state flag:

  • State agencies, courthouses and DMV offices, beneath the American flag on the main pole
  • Public schools and universities, the 4×6 FT and 5×8 FT sizes on campus poles
  • Businesses, banks and car dealerships showing the Commonwealth beside the national flag
  • Homes and HOAs, the 3×5 FT size on a house bracket or a 20 FT residential pole
  • Gifts for new Virginians, graduates and transplants who miss home
Is the Virginia state flag with grommets for indoor or outdoor use?

Outdoor, on a flagpole with snap hooks or a halyard, and indoors on a wall. For an indoor pole, see the pole hem, white fringe or gold fringe versions.

What order do the American and Virginia flags go in?

On one pole, the American flag flies at the peak with the Virginia flag beneath it. On adjacent poles, the American flag is hoisted first and lowered last, and the Virginia flag never goes above it or to its right, so the American flag sits at its own right, the viewer’s left (U.S. Flag Code, 4 U.S.C. § 7).

Which size fits a 20 FT pole?

3×5 FT or 4×6 FT, matching the American flag above it. A 25 FT pole takes 4×6 FT or 5×8 FT.

Do you carry Virginia county and city flags?

Yes. Virginia county and city flags, such as Loudoun County, are in State & Territory Flags, along with the flags of the other 49 states.
