Historical Context:

The King’s Colors, also known as the King’s Colour or the early British Union Flag, was first introduced in 1606 following the Union of the Crowns under King James I. The design combined the red cross of St. George, representing England, with the white saltire of St. Andrew on a blue field, representing Scotland. Although England and Scotland remained separate kingdoms until 1707, the new flag symbolized their shared monarch and was flown by British military forces, government officials, forts, and ships throughout Britain’s North American colonies. It remained the principal British flag in the American colonies until the early years of the American Revolution, when many colonists adopted new banners, including the Grand Union Flag and other early American designs. Today, the King’s Colors remains an important historical flag used in museums, educational exhibits, and Revolutionary War reenactments.
