Historical Background
The United States Border Patrol was established on May 28, 1924, under the Department of Labor, to enforce immigration law between the ports of entry. In 2003 it became part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection within the newly formed Department of Homeland Security. Today it is one of the largest federal law enforcement agencies, with agents assigned to sectors along the northern and southern borders and the coasts. The agency’s own history is documented on the CBP website.
Pennants have long been used by agencies and units for recognition displays, retirements, and award presentations. The Border Patrol pennant follows that tradition with the agency emblem on a tapered field.
Symbolism at a Glance
