Historical Context
The Liberty Flag, also known as the Moultrie Flag, was designed in 1775 by Colonel William Moultrie to prepare for war with Great Britain. It was flown by his troops in the successful defense of Sullivan’s Island (Fort Moultrie) against the British fleet on June 28, 1776. During the 10 hour bombardment, the flag was shot away, but Sergeant William Jasper ran out in the open and hoisted it again, rallying the troops. The victory saved Charleston for the Patriot cause, and the flag became a symbol of freedom in South Carolina and the new Confederacy. It was presented by General Nathanael Greene’s army as the first American flag displayed in the South upon Charleston’s liberation on December 14, 1782. The crescent symbol is from the 2nd South Carolina Regiment uniforms.
