Loudoun County’s flag is drawn from the county’s coat of arms, adopted by the Board of Supervisors in 1968 and formally granted by the College of Arms in London, the heraldic authority whose approval makes it one of the few American county arms with that standing. The arms recall the county’s namesake, John Campbell, fourth Earl of Loudoun, and the county’s founding in 1757. Loudoun County is believed to be the first county in the United States to have a flag derived from arms granted by the College of Arms. The county describes its history on loudoun.gov.
