Product Description
The Plastic Fancy Spear is the flagpole spear finial we sell most for state, country, and organizational flag sets. It is molded from styrene with a vacuum-plated gold finish, so it has the bright metallic look of a brass spear at a fraction of the weight and cost. It measures 7 3/4 IN long and fits the standard ferrule on our indoor and presentation poles.
Protocol reserves the eagle for the American flag, so the flags that stand beside it, a state flag, a foreign flag at an embassy, a school or corporate flag, are traditionally topped with a spear. This one gives you that correct, matched look across a row of poles.
Flagpole Spear Finial Features
- Vacuum-plated gold finish – a bright, even metallic surface that reads as brass from across a room.
- Lightweight styrene – keeps the top of an indoor pole light, so a floor stand stays steady and a parade pole carries easily.
- 7 3/4 IN tapered spear – an elongated, traditional profile that matches ceremonial hardware.
- Fits standard ferrules – sized for our indoor and presentation poles and most other makers’ poles.
- The standard companion finial – for every pole in a set that is not the American flag.
Historical Background
Spear finials go back to the lance heads that carried military standards, and the spear stayed on the flagstaff long after the lance left the battlefield. In American practice the eagle crowns the national flag and a spear crowns everything else, which is why a flagpole spear finial is the most common ornament in any capitol, courthouse, or school lobby. Vacuum plating in the twentieth century made a gold spear affordable enough to put on every pole in a building.
Symbolism at a Glance
