The presidential flag represents the President of the United States alone. Executive Order 10860 sets its design: the President's coat of arms, ringed by white stars that match the number of stars in the American flag, in full color on a dark blue field. Federal law limits who may make and sell the President's seal and coat of arms (18 U.S.C. 713 and Executive Order 11649), so we make this flag for official U.S. government use and the other uses those rules allow, such as library and museum exhibits about the Presidency.
Choose Your Options
Every President of the United States Sewn Flag is made to order, so tell us how you want it built. These are the choices.

- Mounting: A pole hem is a sewn sleeve along the hoist edge that slides over an indoor or parade pole. A pole hem with fringe adds gold rayon fringe on three edges, the traditional ceremonial finish. Grommets are brass rings set into a canvas header, the standard finish for an outdoor flagpole.
- Single-sided or double-sided: A single-sided flag carries the design on the front only; the back is blank. A double-sided flag shows the design on both sides and is built one of three ways:
- Double-reverse: one layer of fabric, so the appliqué shows through on the back in reverse. The lightest build.
- Double-paneled: two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides. The heaviest build, and it needs the most wind to fly.
- Single field, double seal: one field with the emblem on the front and a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side without the weight of two panels.
- Sewn construction: Each color of the emblem is cut from fabric and appliquéd to the field with a satin stitch. Lettering and fine detail are embroidered with a fill stitch. The result stands in relief and reads across a room.
- Size: 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 52x66 IN. For another size, give us the finished width and height you need.

Historical Background
The first presidential flag came from a Navy Department general order in 1882, which put the coat of arms of the United States on a blue field. In 1898 the Department of War designed a different flag for the President, and the Army and Navy each kept a separate flag for the Commander in Chief. On May 29, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order 2390, and the President's flag that followed carried a white star in each of its four corners.
President Harry S. Truman redesigned the flag with Executive Order 9646 on October 25, 1945. He took the four stars out of the corners and placed a ring of 48 stars, one for each state, around the coat of arms. He also had the eagle shown in full color instead of white, and turned its head to its own right, the direction of honor, toward the olive branch. In his words, the new flag has the eagle "looking at the olive branches for peace, instead of the arrows for war." Later executive orders under President Dwight D. Eisenhower added stars for Alaska and Hawaii. Executive Order 10860, in effect since July 4, 1960, sets the 50-star presidential flag used today.
