In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson approved the use of the gold star on mourning armbands, formally recognizing it as a national symbol of sacrifice. A decade later, in 1928, Grace Darling Seibold—who had lost her own son in the war—founded American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. to bring together and support bereaved mothers.
