  • Mounting: A pole hem is a sewn sleeve along the hoist edge that slides over an indoor or parade pole. A pole hem with fringe adds gold rayon fringe on three edges, the traditional ceremonial finish. Grommets are brass rings set into a canvas header, the standard finish for an outdoor flagpole.
  • Single-sided or double-sided: A single-sided flag carries the design on the front only; the back is blank. A double-sided flag shows the design on both sides and is built one of three ways:
    • Double-reverse: one layer of fabric, printed on one side so the dye soaks through and the design shows on the back in reverse. The lightest build.
    • Double-paneled: two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides. The heaviest build, and it needs the most wind to fly.
    • Single field, double seal: one field with the emblem on the front and a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side without the weight of two panels.
  • Printed construction: Acid dye bonds into the nylon fiber, so the color goes deep and stays bright outdoors. Every printed flag is lock stitched, the stronger interlocking stitch, on the seams and header. For appliqué and embroidery instead of print, see the sewn version of this flag.
  • Size: 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 5x8 FT, 52x66 IN. For another size, give us the finished width and height you need.

Federal oversight of civil aviation began with the Air Commerce Act of 1926, which created an Aeronautics Branch in the Department of Commerce, renamed the Bureau of Air Commerce in 1934. President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Civil Aeronautics Act in 1938, creating the Civil Aeronautics Authority. In 1940 it was split into the Civil Aeronautics Administration, which returned to the Department of Commerce, and the Civil Aeronautics Board.

On August 23, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal Aviation Act, which created an independent Federal Aviation Agency responsible for civil aviation safety. Elwood "Pete" Quesada took office as its first Administrator on November 1, 1958, and on December 31, 1958 the agency took on the full scope of its duties, replacing the Civil Aeronautics Administration. When the new Department of Transportation began full operations on April 1, 1967, the Federal Aviation Agency became one of its modal organizations and was renamed the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Federal Aviation Act of 1958 directed the new agency to adopt an official seal. The Army provided several designs, and after several changes the agency accepted one on July 21, 1959. Administrator Quesada formally adopted the seal on October 29, 1959, and it was published in the Federal Register on November 5, 1959. The wording changed when the agency was renamed in 1967, and in 2006 the FAA removed the fleur de lis from the top of the compass.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Flag carries the FAA emblem at the center of an orange field. FAA Order 1700.6D describes the FAA logo as a circular gold border around a blue background with the white words "Federal Aviation" at the top and "Administration" at the bottom, enclosing a light green globe with gold latitude and longitude markings and a gold four-pointed compass rose with a stylized gold wing on its horizontal axis. We make it in the finish and size you order.

Which options can I choose on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Printed Flag?

Single-sided or double-sided; a pole hem, a fringed pole hem or grommets; and 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 5x8 FT or 52x66 IN. Review them above, then call or request a quote.

How is a double-sided flag made?

Three ways. Double-reverse is one layer of fabric, so the design shows through on the back in reverse; it is the lightest build and flies in the least wind. Double-paneled is two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides; it is the heaviest. Single field, double seal is one field with a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side at close to single-layer weight.

For a flag seen from both sides indoors, double-paneled or single field double seal reads best. For an outdoor pole, double-reverse flies most easily. Tell us where the flag will hang and we will recommend one.

Should I order the Federal Aviation Administration flag sewn or printed?

Sewn appliqué and embroidery gives the emblem relief and texture, and it is the traditional choice for a ceremonial flag indoors. Printed reproduces fine seal detail exactly and is the usual choice for an outdoor flagpole. Both are made in the USA. If you are unsure, tell us where the flag will be displayed and we will recommend one.

Can the FAA printed flag be displayed indoors?

Yes. Order it with a pole hem, plain or with fringe, for an indoor or parade pole. For a formal ceremonial flag with appliqué and embroidery, see the FAA sewn flag.

How long does a printed flag last outdoors?

It depends on wind, sun and how often it flies. Acid dye bonds into the nylon fiber, so the color holds up well, and every printed flag is lock stitched for the wind. Tell us where the flag will fly and we will recommend a size and a replacement schedule.

How is the Federal Aviation Administration flag flown with the American flag?

The American flag takes the position of honor. On separate poles of the same height it flies on its own right, which is the viewer’s left. When two flags share one halyard, the American flag is at the peak and the Federal Aviation Administration flag flies below it.
