The design on the Iowa Flag Pole Hem comes from this history.

The Iowa Legislature accepted the state flag on March 29, 1921, from a design by Dixie Cornell Gebhardt of Knoxville, Iowa.

The flag has a blue panel at the hoist, a red panel at the fly and a white center twice as wide, with a soaring eagle carrying blue streamers that bear the state motto, above the name IOWA in crimson capitals.

Symbolism at a Glance

  • Red: Courage, zeal and fervency, in the designer’s words.
  • White: Purity, clean living and rectitude of conduct.
  • Blue: Loyalty, devotion, friendship, justice and truth.
  • Eagle and streamers: Carry the state motto above the name IOWA.

  • Offices and conference rooms on an indoor pole and stand
  • Parades and ceremonies
  • Schools, classrooms and auditoriums
  • Homes, on a pole without a halyard
Is the Iowa Flag Pole Hem for indoor or outdoor use?

Both. The pole hem slides over the pole, indoors or out. For a flagpole with a halyard and snap hooks, see the grommets version.

What other versions of the Iowa flag are there?

We also make it with brass grommets for outdoor flagpoles and fringe for ceremonial display.

What order do the American and Iowa flags go in?

On one pole, the American flag flies at the peak with the Iowa flag beneath it. On adjacent poles, the American flag is hoisted first and lowered last, and the Iowa flag never goes above it or to its right, so the American flag sits at its own right, the viewer’s left (U.S. Flag Code, 4 U.S.C. § 7).

Do you carry flags for the other states?

Yes. Flags for all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories are in State & Territory Flags.
