Historical Background

The U.S. Air Force 4-Star General Officer Flag represents the rank of General, the highest active-duty rank in the Air Force. Established as a separate branch in 1947, the Air Force uses this flag to denote top-level command authority. The white field with four blue stars follows longstanding U.S. military tradition for personal rank flags. These flags are flown to indicate the presence of a four-star general, who often leads major commands such as Air Combat Command, Pacific Air Forces, or serves as Chief of Staff of the Air Force. They embody the core values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do, honoring the exceptional strategic leadership that guides America’s air and space superiority.
