The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency is a Department of Defense agency and the U.S. government's largest integrated security services provider. It runs background investigations, adjudications and continuous vetting for federal employees and cleared contractors, oversees the National Industrial Security Program, and counters foreign and insider threats to cleared industry. It also trains security professionals through the DCSA Security Academy and the Center for Development of Security Excellence. DCSA is the former Defense Security Service under a new name, and in 2019 it took in the National Background Investigations Bureau.
Choose Your Options
Every Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) Printed Flag is made to order, so tell us how you want it built. These are the choices.

- Mounting: A pole hem is a sewn sleeve along the hoist edge that slides over an indoor or parade pole. A pole hem with fringe adds gold rayon fringe on three edges, the traditional ceremonial finish. Grommets are brass rings set into a canvas header, the standard finish for an outdoor flagpole.
- Single-sided or double-sided: A single-sided flag carries the design on the front only; the back is blank. A double-sided flag shows the design on both sides and is built one of three ways:
- Double-reverse: one layer of fabric, printed on one side so the dye soaks through and the design shows on the back in reverse. The lightest build.
- Double-paneled: two panels sewn back to back, so the design reads correctly on both sides. The heaviest build, and it needs the most wind to fly.
- Single field, double seal: one field with the emblem on the front and a second emblem tacked to the back, so the seal reads correctly from either side without the weight of two panels.
- Printed construction: Acid dye bonds into the nylon fiber, so the color goes deep and stays bright outdoors. Every printed flag is lock stitched, the stronger interlocking stitch, on the seams and header. For appliqué and embroidery instead of print, see the sewn version of this flag.
- Size: 3x4 FT, 3x5 FT, 4x6 FT, 5x8 FT, 52x66 IN. For another size, give us the finished width and height you need.

Historical Background
The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency began as the Defense Investigative Service, which the Secretary of Defense established effective January 1, 1972, to give the Department of Defense a single, centrally directed personnel security investigative service. The agency was later renamed the Defense Security Service. In 1993, Executive Order 12829 created the National Industrial Security Program, which DCSA oversees today for cleared contractors.
Executive Order 13869, signed April 24, 2019, directed the Secretary of Defense to rename the Defense Security Service as DCSA. It also required that primary responsibility for government-wide background investigations move from the Office of Personnel Management to the Department of Defense. The new name took effect in June 2019. On October 1, 2019, the National Background Investigations Bureau moved from the Office of Personnel Management to DCSA. The DoD Consolidated Adjudications Facility transferred in the same day, bringing personnel vetting and industrial security together in one agency.
The agency's seal, as described by The Institute of Heraldry, shows an eagle in flight lifting a portcullis by its chains. Wavy lines, three arrowheads, a laurel and olive wreath, rays and thirteen gold stars complete the design.
