Product Description

This rear admiral lower half flag is the personal flag of a one-star flag officer of the United States Navy: a single white star centered on a dark blue field, the line officer pattern. It is printed on UV-resistant 200 denier nylon, finished with a flannel-lined pole hem, Velcro tabs, and a 2.5 IN golden yellow rayon fringe, and made in the USA. Sizes 3 FT x 4 FT, 3 FT x 5 FT, 43 IN x 61.5 IN, 4 FT x 6 FT, and 52 IN x 66 IN.

Rear admiral (lower half) is the Navy’s first flag officer grade, and this flag goes up in the new admiral’s office the week of the promotion. We make it for commands across the National Capital Region. For the two-star flag, see the Navy two-star rear admiral flag; for the other services and ranks, our military flags.

Historical Background

The one-star Navy grade has had several names. Commodore was the historic title, revived briefly as commodore admiral in the 1980s, and since 1985 the grade has been rear admiral (lower half), with two-star officers styled rear admiral (upper half). The flag follows the Navy’s long practice of white stars on blue for line flag officers, one star for the lowest grade. A rear admiral lower half flag stands in the officer’s office and at ceremonies; afloat it flies from the flagship. The Navy sets the design and use of flag officers’ flags by regulation.

Staff corps officers fly the reverse pattern, blue stars on white.

What is the difference between lower half and upper half?

Rear admiral (lower half) is the one-star grade, O-7. Rear admiral (upper half) is the two-star grade, O-8. The flags differ by the number of stars.

Which flags stand with the admiral’s flag in an office?

The American flag at the officer’s right, then the Navy flag, then the personal flag, and any command flag after that.

Is the star printed on both sides?

It prints through the nylon and reads correctly from either side.

Do you make the staff corps version?

Yes. This is the line officer flag, a white star on blue. The staff corps flag has a blue star on white.

Can it be flown outdoors?

This is a fringed indoor flag. Ask us about an unfringed flag with grommets.
